coconut oil kills staphylococcus aureus

okay, i know this is kinda a departure for this blog and probably generally qualifies as TMI, but it’s important so here goes:

a few weeks ago, i got what looked like a “spider bite” on my forehead. within a day it started to itch and within two days it had started to spread to an area about the size of a dime. thinking it was some form of dermatitis, i self-treated it with various creams and gels (clotrimazole, salicylic acid, sea salt water) and sunlight. after a few days when it became obvious that none of those had worked, i resorted to hydrogen peroxide. it immediately dried up the rash on contact but left the area tender and raw, as if it had been scraped on the pavement or something. so then i was convinced it was a form of staphylococcus aureas (staphylococcus epidermidis).

HOWEVER, my disclaimer is i DID NOT HAVE IT TESTED NOR CULTURED. the reason for this is that i had just recently (in what i’d assumed was coincidental) come off a bout of ciproflaxicin for a symptomatic UTI, the tests for which had come back NEGATIVE. luckily my doctor had prescribed the antibiotic beforehand, and within a couple days i felt fine (but completed the drug therapy anyway of course). after the tests came back negative (about halfway through my treatment), my doctor decided to “chalk it up” to “inflammation” which may have been assuaged by the drug— which to me was just totally ridiculous, come on now. i’m almost 45 years old, i know a goddamn UTI when i feel one.
but okay, i was cured, that’s all that mattered.

needless to say, i was not encouraged to go back and have my rash tested, only to maybe have it also test negative and be sent along my way with another round of antibiotics– especially since staphylococcus has the tendency to build up a resistance to these drugs, and i did not want to subject my body to any more antibiotics needlessly. in the meantime, the rash was still spreading along the outer edges of the scar tissue where the hydrogen peroxide had done its work, and had begun to also form along my brow line right above my eyelids.

anyway, hopefully you’ve stumbled on this because, like me, you’ve been feverishly googling for a treatment/cure for a similar (albeit somewhat mild but insidious) ailment. so, here was my course of action for a period of about five days:

– i immediately changed all the sheets, pillowcases, and towels in the house, and resorted to using a towel JUST ONCE before replacing it with a fresh one, and using only new clean paper towels on my face.

– i sprayed down the bed, pillows, sofas, chairs, cushions, anywhere i’d been, with a healthy dose of Lysol.

– i scrubbed down the bathrooms and kitchen with Ajax and Palmolive antibacterial soap (with Lactic Acid)— NOT DIAL, which contains triclosan, to which bacteria may also become resistant. i wiped down most surfaces including my computer, keyboard, table tops, iPads, iPods, remote controls, etc with Lysol disinfecting wipes.

– i began to use hand sanitizer almost religiously.

– i threw out all bars of soap and any creams and lotions that did not come out of a pump, including any tubes where my fingers may have touched the openings and contaminated their contents.

– i threw out my razors and began sterilizing both my new razors and tweezer in 70% alcohol before and after each use.

– i extracted creams from brand new jars only with q-tips, using a new swab for every application, never inserting my fingers inside, and replaced all soaps with liquid pump dispensers (regular, NOT anti-bacterial).

– i started to cleanse my face twice a day with an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide wash in accordance with this suggestion (i searched for 10% but could only find one at 3.7%).

– and finally and most importantly, i thank God i found this link, which provided a bit of corroborative information and suggested 100% VIRGIN COCONUT OIL.

after about three days of use two to three times a day, the rash that was slowly and insidiously eating my face is finally and completely GONE.

and now i’m writing this, because that aforementioned God-sent information took me days and days and days of research to find.

i hope this helps somebody else. good luck.

:)

  1. I’ve used garlic and it’s worked great. Lime juice and coconut oil work great also. The rest of the processes that you described haven’t been necessary for me. I know that tests for many infections will show up negative if the antibiotic has been administered prior to the sample being obtained. Your doctor should know this also.

  2. thanks, J!
actually i wasn’t sure if those other steps were necessary, but i did them just to be safe. sure enough, after my face had cleared, a few days later it felt like it was returning to a different part of my forehead. i’m almost positive it was because i had neglected to toss out one little bottle of aloe. after i tossed that too, i got rid of the recurrence with the coconut oil.
then guess what, a couple more days– it felt like it was in my hairline spreading to my scalp. sigh, tossed out the hairbrush, bought coconut shampoo and conditioner and have been using it ever since.
no more recurrences, and call me crazy but i could swear my hair is getting thicker too :)

    1. Hi i never tried coconut oil. But the staph is all over my scalp, and skin. All areas, i wash my clothes in antibacterial by dettol. Once or twice i can feel the staph on my clothes. I threw it away. I was wondering how do you wash your clothes? Mine are so expensive. I feel really painful throwing it away. Isit necessary to use bleach? My washing machine might not be able to take bleach. Also do you put your clothes in laundry bag? Please advise.

  3. oh and actually J– i left the test sample with him, and then he prescribed the antibiotic. i only started taking it a few hours after i left his office.
the reason the test results took so long (several days) is because evidently they tested it twice due to the negative result.

  4. Treating staph topically cannot eradicate the infection as it continues to live in the blood. It will go dormant only to come back at some given point in time, sometimes on a different location of the body. Quite often not for many years. This does not mean that the staph is not doing damage on other internal levels. The key is to kill it in the blood and tissues. I have been on MMS for just over two weeks and the eruptions are gone, however, I will continue for another two weeks to ensure it is killed off internally. Nasty business!

  5. DemiK is wrong. Topical staph is not in the blood. You should take antibiotics only when staph is inside the body. Antibiotics for no reason is bad for the body, will kill probiotics. Also staph develops resistance to meds, therefore use only when needed.

Staph will recur bc 1 in 5 people carried the bacteria, usually in nose. Not everyone develops symptoms, but is easily spread. Coconut oil is the best, benzoyl also works but will dry out the skin. Also benzoyl should not be used if going out in the sun.

    1. First of all MMS is not an antibiotic. When boils erupt on the skin they are usually open. Are you telling me that this does not enter the bloodstream? MMS will kill staph whether it is internal or not.

  6. Here is my problem; an overzealous dermatologist seeking business with evil intent pressured healing wounds into my skin causing a major infection several months ago – they cannot stand it if one is healing oneself and you may ask then why go to a dermatologist, and the answer is, bad judgment on my part; but that does not make the problem of evil dermatologists go away or my problem to go away. The judgment of the other dermatologists I went to is also devastating “scar tissue” giving cortisone and more cortisone, different strengths, none appropriate – the next question is, how much coconut oil does one use? The devastation caused by this dermatologist has caused inside pimples I believe; originally I was healing but now months later after severe infection i am still trying to heal. Any suggestions? thanks

  7. hi Annie,
sorry you’re going through all that. i’m not sure the extent of your infection, and i’m not sure what you mean by “inside pimples,” but what i do know is that coconut oil can be used quite liberally without fear of overdose like antibiotics or cortisone.

personally i applied the oil freely twice a day to my (small) infection until it went away (about 4 or 5 days), but now i use it daily as both a face and body moisturizer, simply because i like it. i have not had any outbreaks since, and also noticed a dramatic decrease in the heat rashes i used to get in the summertime.

    hope that helps.

  8. my wife went for a test and she was told that she had staph eureus.she was charged a huge amount of money for treatment.
Now she took my urine to the doctor who also ran some test and told her that i am also a carrier of the staph too.
Now the doctor said,my wife have not been able to concieve becos of the presence of staphylococus in her body.
    How true is dis?

  9. oh no– i’m sorry, Anon.

and unfortunately i really don’t have any info about anything like that. my post was about external staph only, so i really don’t know how internal staph can affect fertility.

all i can suggest is to please at least seek out a second opinion with another doctor.

i wish you all the best.

  10. Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). Throughout the tropical world, it has provided the primary source of fat in the diets of millions of people for generations. It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Because of its stability, it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidity, lasting up to two years owing to the high saturated fat content.`

  18. capyrlic acid is derived from coconut oil and it worked for me on candida. i wonder if saline solution would guard against staph. sunshine i heard is good also but how long to sit in the sun.

  19. hi Layla,
thank you! i also found that grapefruit seed extract is very effective against candida. there’s a lot of info about it that’s googlable if you’re so inclined.
don’t know about saline, but i find coconut oil works so well against topical staph, that i swear by it and have found no need to try other solutions.
    best of luck with everything!

  20. Hello…. Pls i have total body tiredness, headaches and coloured urination. What could be wrong wit me?

  21. I know that coconut oil is very good against bacterias, etc. BUT it’s also “heavy” and can block pores :/ I tried to use it on my face, not much, but it blocked my pores if I was using it regularly. And you put it 2-3times a day? Even super light oil, which shouldn’t block pores, used twice a day blocks pores. Skin is over-fed, resulting in blocked pores/pimples/etc.

I wash my face twice a day, but I only put oil (light, raspberry oil) with a bit of hyaluronic gel once a day in the morning.

So, really using coconut oil so often every day doesn’t give you blocked pores?

    1. Manuka honey (UMF Certified 15+) is proven to kill staph completely. You put it on a dressing and cover a wound and it heals it! I don’t have Staph but have done a lot of research into it because it sounds awful that so many people are given antibiotics for something that is very easy to become antibiotic resistant. I’ve also read amazing things about colloidal silver.

  22. I have dah challenge of staph pls, hw may get de coconut oil.
